The Meliaceae include the mahoganies, valued for timber, and a number of trees grown for shade. Neem is one of the best known, a broad, dense tree planted along streets and around houses.
The lookalike
Melia azedarach, known as chinaberry or Persian lilac, belongs to the same family and looks broadly similar. The classical texts call it Mahanimba. It is a different tree and a different material, which is why the species name matters.
