Kaunch and the Vernacular Names

A plant usually has three sets of names: what the classical texts call it, what people call it, and what botany calls it.

Three registers

  • Classical: Kapikacchu, Atmagupta.
  • Vernacular: kaunch in Hindi usage; velvet bean and cowhage in English.
  • Botanical: Mucuna pruriens.

Why the vernacular is the least reliable

Everyday names drift. They attach to whatever plant fills a role locally, and they cross between species without ceremony. The classical names are more stable but still describe rather than identify, which is why commentators can disagree about what a classical name covers.
