Most classical Thailams are cooked on a sesame base. A smaller group is cooked on coconut oil instead, known in classical as Keram, and the base changes the character of the finished oil: lighter on the skin, cooling rather than warming, and traditionally favoured for the head and hair and for the hotter part of the year.
