Mikä on Abhyanga-öljy?

Abhyanga oil refers to any oil used for Abhyanga — the Ayurvedic practice of warm oil self-massage. This daily ritual is one of the most nurturing practices in traditional Ayurveda, and choosing the right oil makes a meaningful difference.

In Ayurveda, different body types benefit from different oils. If you tend toward cold hands and feet, dry skin, and a restless mind — qualities associated with Vata — warming, heavy oils work best. Dhanwantharam Thailam is an excellent choice, with its rich texture and nourishing herbs.

If you run warm, have sensitive or reactive skin, and tend toward intensity — Pitta qualities — cooling oils suit you better. Ksheerabala Thailam, made with milk and calming herbs, offers a soothing balance.

If you tend toward heaviness, congestion, or sluggishness — Kapha qualities — lighter, more stimulating oils help. Plain sesame oil or formulas with invigorating herbs work well, used in smaller amounts with more vigorous massage.

Most people have a mix of these qualities, so observe how different oils feel on your body. The "right" oil is ultimately the one that makes you feel balanced and nourished.

To practice Abhyanga, warm your chosen oil and apply it generously to your whole body. Use long strokes on your limbs and circular motions on your joints. Don't rush — the massage itself is part of the practice. Spend ten to twenty minutes, then let the oil absorb before bathing with warm water.

Regular Abhyanga — even just once or twice a week — can become a grounding ritual. The combination of warm oil, intentional touch, and quiet time creates something more than just physical benefits.
