What Keeps a Thailam Fresh? Cooking, Cap, Light, Air and Heat
In short: A Thailam stays fresh because of how it is cooked and how it is kept: the water is cooked out of the oil, and after that a closed cap, shade, a cool place and clean handling do the rest. The bottle material is not on that list, because the shelf life and quality of the oil are the same in food-grade PET as in glass.
The question of what keeps a Thailam fresh has a short answer and a slightly longer explanation. The short answer is the cooking and the care. The longer explanation is worth a few minutes, because many shoppers look first at the bottle and assume that glass must protect a classical herbal oil better than anything else. It does not. What protects the oil happens before it is bottled and after you open it, and this guide from Art of Vedas goes through each point in turn.
How is a Thailam made, and why does that matter for freshness?
A Thailam is cooked until the water has left the oil. This classical process is called Sneha Paka, and it is the main reason a finished Thailam keeps well.
A Thailam is not a plain oil with something stirred in at the end. The oil and its herbal ingredients are cooked together, slowly and with attention, and the cooking is only complete when the water has gone. What remains is oil that carries the character of the recipe and holds no water of its own.
An oil cooked to this point starts its life in the bottle in a stable state. Everything that follows, from the cap to the cupboard, is about keeping it that way.
Six things protect a Thailam: complete cooking, a closed cap, shade, little contact with air, a cool place and clean handling. Five of them are in your hands once the bottle is opened.
How it is cooked. The water is cooked out of the oil before it is bottled. This is done for you and cannot be added later.
A closed cap. A firmly closed bottle keeps dust, moisture and stray drops of water out.
Light. Direct sunlight is hard on any oil. A cupboard or a drawer is better than a windowsill.
Air. Oil changes slowly when it stands open to the air. Pour what you need and close the bottle again.
Heat. Warmth speeds up change in oils. A cool, dry spot away from the radiator and the cooker is the right place.
Clean handling. Clean, dry hands and a dry bottle neck keep water and residue out of the oil.
Why is the bottle material not on that list?
Because it does not change the oil. The quality team behind our oils confirms that the shelf life and quality of a Thailam are the same in food-grade PET as in glass.
Art of Vedas bottles its Thailams in food-grade PET, in 200 ml and 450 ml sizes. PET is the clear, light plastic used for edible oils and drinks. It is not made with BPA and needs no plasticisers, it does not shatter on a bathroom floor, and it weighs far less than glass. In India, where classical Ayurvedic oils come from, PET has been normal practice for these oils for many years.
Glass is a good material too. It is fully inert and recyclable, and it is also heavy and breakable. Neither material cooks the oil, closes the cap or keeps the bottle out of the sun, which is why neither belongs on the list above. The full comparison is set out in PET or glass for Ayurvedic oils, and the practical side of it in packaging weight and recycling.
Does a Thailam last longer in glass?
No. A Thailam does not last longer in glass, and glass does not make it stronger. Glass mainly changes how a bottle looks and feels, what it weighs and what it costs to ship.
Glass feels substantial in the hand, but feel and weight are qualities of the bottle and not of the oil inside. The shelf life printed on each Art of Vedas bottle applies to that bottle exactly as sold, so there is nothing to add or subtract for the material. How those dates work is explained in shelf life of Ayurvedic oils and Ghritham.
Art of Vedas does use glass for the small oils that are dosed by the drop, such as Nasya Oil. A dropper bottle suits a tiny volume of concentrated oil, so that is a choice of format and not a ranking of quality. The reasoning is given in why Nasya Oil is in glass.
How should you keep an opened bottle at home?
Keep it closed, cool and dry, away from direct sunlight, and handle it with clean, dry hands. That is the whole routine.
In daily use this comes down to a few small habits. Many people warm their oil before Abhyanga. Pour the amount you need into a small bowl and warm the bowl, so that the bottle itself stays cool. Do not pour unused oil back into the bottle. Wipe the neck dry before closing, especially in a bathroom where steam and wet hands are close by.
When you compare classical oils, the useful questions are about the oil: whether it follows the classical recipe, whether it has been cooked to completion, and whether the bottle carries a clear shelf life. The container is a practical matter of weight, handling and shipping.
A Thailam that was cooked properly and is kept closed, shaded, cool and clean will stay as it should for the shelf life printed on the bottle. Those are the things that keep it fresh, and all of them are either done before the bottle reaches you or within your own reach afterwards.
Thailams and Kuzhambus are for external use only. Ghrithams are food supplements and do not replace a varied diet.
